Qualifications

The Money for Life programme provides two fully-funded qualifications which will enable practitioners in FE sector institutions or community groups to equip their learners with vital money management skills. These qualifications can be gained by completing either the ‘Teach Me’ or ‘Teach Others’ Financial Capability courses, both of which are accredited by the Open College Network.

Teach Me Financial Capability

An interactive online course covering a series of financial topics. This course will help you increase your knowledge of financial topics so you feel more confident when delivering financial capability sessions to your learners or clients.

What is Teach Me Financial Capability?
An online course that will introduce you to a series of financial topics, providing you with a good understanding of key financial products; the implications of financial exclusion; key terminology and sources of advice and support. The course offers the opportunity to increase your knowledge in these areas so that you can feel more confident when delivering financial capability sessions to your learners or clients.

You will complete the course through interactive online learning, broken down into bite-sized chunks. If you successfully complete the course and pass the assessment you will be awarded a nationally recognised qualification in Facilitating Adult Financial Capability accredited by the Open College Network. This is a Level 3 qualification.

Is this course for me?
This course is for anyone who wants to increase their financial knowledge in order to deliver financial capability sessions to learners or clients. It is particularly appropriate for FE practitioners, teachers and community workers or volunteers. (N.B. you can take the Teach Me course as preparation for the Teach Others course.)

Am I eligible to apply?
In order to be eligible for Teach Me you must meet each of the following criteria:

  • You are working for a non-profit organisation
  • You have approval of your line manager or a senior person in your organisation to take the course
  • You are working or volunteering for one of the following types of organisations
    • Further education
    • Higher education
    • Work-based education
    • Adult community learning
    • Registered charity
    • Local authority
    • Community organisation delivering financial capability (e.g. RSL, housing association, library, prison service, etc.)

How long will the course take?
The course should take approximately 30 hours to complete, potentially with some additional time to prepare for and submit your final assignment. You will have 2 months to finish the course from the date of registration.

What will I be able to do by the end of Teach Me?

  • Understand the concept of financial exclusion and its impact on individuals and society
  • Understand the structure of the Adult Financial Capability Framework (AFCaF), a financial literacy resource, and be able to use it with your learners or clients
  • Understand financial products and how they address people’s needs
  • Understand how to apply the financial planning process to personal circumstances
  • Know where to access information, advice, guidance and support in relation to financial products and services

Teach Others Financial Capability

A two-day taught course. This course is for anyone who wants to deliver financial capability sessions to their learners or clients. It has been designed for those who are not qualified teachers, such as those working or volunteering in non-teaching positions within FE, outreach centres and key agencies in the community.

What is Teach Others Financial Capability?
Teach Others will give you the knowledge, skills and resources you need to facilitate financial capability sessions for your learners and clients.

If you successfully complete the course and pass the assessment you will be awarded a nationally recognised qualification in Facilitating Adult Financial Capability accredited by the Open College Network. This is a Level 3 qualification.

Is this course for me?
This course is for anyone who wants to deliver financial capability sessions to their learners or clients, and does not already have a formal teaching qualification. You could be an advice and guidance worker in a further education college, working for a housing association, or volunteering for a charity that works with disadvantaged communities. This course is designed for anyone who is already confident with the subject area of financial capability. If this is not the case, you may wish to consider applying for our Teach Me programme first, which will equip you with the baseline knowledge you need.

Am I eligible to apply?
In order to be eligible for Teach Others you must have a good level of knowledge of financial services and products and personal money management gained in one of the following ways:

  • Planning to, or have taken, the Teach Me Qualification
  • Completed an equivalent training programme to Teach Me
  • Have relevant work experience (e.g. in the financial sector)
  • Have relevant life experiences (e.g. through managing own personal finances)

In addition you must meet each of the following criteria:

  • You are working for a non-profit organisation
  • You have approval of your line manager or a senior person in your organisation to take the course
  • You are working or volunteering for one of the following types of organisations
    • Further education
    • Higher education
    • Work-based education
    • Adult community learning
    • Registered charity

How long will this course take?
This a two-day course with a two-week break between Day 1 and Day 2. You will need to make time for some pre-course work before Day 1, and also to plan your assessment and assignment for Day 2. You will need to submit your assignment within 2 weeks of completing Day 2.

What will I be able to do by the end of Teach Others?

  • Create an environment conducive to learning
  • Get to know my learners, their knowledge and their needs and what they want to achieve
  • Understand which facilitation methods work for a range of learner groups
  • Plan and structure a timed financial capability session
  • Be able to use a range of financial capability teaching methods
  • Be able to select resources and know when and where to refer learners for more detailed information
  • Use the right language for my learners
  • Know how to deal with difficult situations

Where and when are the courses taking place?
We have a number of courses scheduled to take place in different locations around the country. On the application form we’ll ask you to select from a drop-down menu which location you would prefer to attend your course in. We will then contact you to let you know the available dates for you to attend a course in that town or city.

Both qualifications are accredited by the Open College Network. They are Level 3 qualifications.

Commitment
Although these courses are both fully-funded, it does not mean that they do not have a value. The Teach Others course has a cost value of £350 and the Teach Me course has a cost value of £200. This year Lloyds Banking Group is funding 700 training places on each course (1400 places in total). If you are awarded a fully-funded place and do not attend any part of the course or complete your assessment, you are taking up a place that could have been used by someone else. Before you apply, please think carefully about whether you are willing to commit 100% to your chosen course and see it through to the end.
